Friends locked just in case!

I found out who my giftee is.  My giftee is (not telling - it's a secret, silly!!), but it's a creator I greatly admire.  I'm terrified I won't be able to make something good enough for them.

I made a hair yesterday I think they will like, and I already have another in the backlog of stuff I haven't uploaded yet that they might enjoy.... maybe....

I recently (like, the other week) worked out how to apply patterns in Paint Shop Pro (oldish version of Photoshop still won't let me do that properly...)  I have a couple of questions to those on my friends list who create clothing.  I understand about layers and opacity.  I just wondered, is this tutorial a good method to use for applying shadows/highlights?  And do you have any pointers for me (in really plain layman's English please - I'm pretty noob at this!)?
